The National ASA Launches 2010 Partnerships

The mission of the National African Students Association is to unite African youth across the US Diaspora to empower themselves through our outreach programs, National Conference, and emphasis on academic achievement in order to collectively contribute to the progress of the African continent.

In our efforts to work toward progress, the organization has launched a partnership with ONE, an international philanthropic organization. ONE is ‘grassroots campaign and advocacy organization’ committed to fighting against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. Cofounded by Bono and other campaigners, ONE is nonpartisan and works closely with African policy makers and activists. By working with ONE, the National African Students Association will encourage African youth to have a more active voice in advocacy, as the majority of this advocacy affects the African continent. It is essential in creating change that we, as African youth, are informed of the challenges of the African continent as well as the legislation affecting it.

In addition to this partnership, the National ASA has formed a partnership with ZebraJobs, a website company associated with Danya International dedicated to connecting individuals worldwide to jobs and opportunities on the African continent. Zebrajobs has collaborated with the National ASA to provide a direct resource to African youth in the undergraduate or graduate level to search jobs internships in Africa, attend virtual job fairs, and access other opportunities in order to achieve Zebrajobs’ mantra- ‘reversing the brain drain.’ The National ASA will have a ‘widget’ by the end of January on our website to allow visitors the ability to perform such searches.

Additionally, the National African Students Association is heading the “Empowered by Numbers Campaign” to promote the U.S. Census 2010 across the African student population. This outreach campaign will educate African students at the collegiate level about the importance of representation in the US Census by launching several initiatives throughout our respective regions nationwide. The activities will lay the groundwork and make visible nationwide US Census 2010 activities in hard to reach African student communities on college campuses.  Because the Census 2010 data effects critical decisions, involving issues such as Congressional representation and allocation of more than $300 billion annually in federal funding, the National ASA will also embark in engaging all affiliate African organizations.  With this partnership, the US Census 2010 will be supportive of publicity efforts for the census as well as promotional materials needed by the National ASA.

Overview of Costs:

• Hotel rooms will be the extremely low price of $74 per night. The rooms can hold 1-4 people and are either doubles or kings with pullout beds. www.nationalasa.org/annual-conference/hotel-registration
• Airtran is offering a 10% discount on lowest available airfare.  Please try looking for a deal with Airtran via their web deals or specials.  In order to get a discount, one must call to book their travel with our code that will available under the Annual Conference tab.
• Registration for affiliated schools is currently $35 per person.
• Registration for unaffiliated schools is currently $45 per person.

Please note that at this time, we will register 15 people per university and others who hope to register will be placed on a waiting list and given a slot as we see our availability. Conference specific questions should be directed to nationalasaconference@nationalasa.org
