‘My Vision’ Contest

Why we are doing this?
The National African Students Association recognizes the great need on the African continent as well as the potential of African youth to become powerful leaders of the future. We also recognize the fact that we have the opportunity to create solutions to problems that exist in our diverse communities, no matter how small. Many study abroad programs and organizations that perform work abroad are interested in seeing more African youth going abroad since the majority of these programs are intended to benefit Africa.
Through the ‘My Vision’ Contest, we hope to establish a program that would encourage African youth to implement change in our African communities, hence our 09-10 Conference Theme ‘Placing an African Face on African Development.’ Contestants are required to develop a Business or Community Service action plan to implement in a specific community in an African nation or within an African community existing within the states, such as refugee populations. The winner(s) will be funded by the National ASA to travel during summer of 2010 for between six and ten weeks to enact their plan in that specific community. Winner(s) can choose the option of working in cooperation with already established organizations that benefit this specific community. The contest will open for submissions on November 1st, 2009 and will close on January 15th, 2010. The deadline was extended to February 15th, 2010.
Who can apply?
• Contestants must attend an institution of higher learning, either at the undergraduate or graduate level to apply.
• Contestants must be affiliated with an African student group on their campus. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
• Contestants cannot be in a position of leadership within the National ASA either on the National or Regional level. Delegates to the National ASA for member institutions are eligible.
• Only individual submissions will be accepted; this contest is not open to group submissions.
