Barbara Shaibu
| Major: | Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics; Minor:Legal Studies and History |
|---|---|
| Institution: | University of Pennsylvania |
| Position | Northeastern Vice President |
Barbara Shaibu is currently a junior at the University of Pennsylvania. Majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), with a Legal Studies and History minor, she has a keen interest in advocacy and aspires to one day pursue a law degree. Raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Barbara represents one of the many first-generation Nigerian-Americans from the Washington Metropolitan Area and considers joining the National African Student Association an important highlight in her college experience. She sees the organization as a fundamental step in a grassroots movement to effectuate progressive change in Africa. Though the National ASA does not primarily have a political focus, the organization appeals to her most because of how it is uniquely situated. By empowering young leaders of tomorrow to invest in any capacity to the development of Africa –whether it is through self-improvement or by directly implementing projects in Africa—representation of Africans globally is a step forward. Barbara strongly believes in the Zulu word “UBUNTU”—“I am because WE are,” a theme embraced by Penn’s African Student Association and an Igala phrase that goes back to her roots,—“Udama Ch’ukpahiu” meaning “Unity is Power.”

Onyeka Otugo
| Major: | MAJOR |
|---|---|
| Institution: | University of Maryland - College Park |
| Position | Director of Finance |
Onyeka Otugo is currently a junior at the University of Maryland where she is double majoring in Biology and Art Studio. Upon graduation, she plans on attending medical school and obtaining a combined MD/MA degree. Onyeka is excited about taking on a leadership role in the National African Students Association primarily because of the opportunity to be involved in a national organization that has an important mission. National ASA embodies Gandhi’s words of being “the change that you want to see in the world.” An important aspect of the National ASA’s mission first starts with unifying various African student organizations. Through unity, the National ASA will be able to empower African youth and create nationwide networks within Africans in the diaspora. These components of National ASA's vision are all essential in bringing about actual change, future leaders, and opportunities in the world that we live in today. Onyeka is excited about working with this organization to bring about that change by helping the National ASA create partnerships with collegiate and non-collegiate African run organizations to increase the National ASA’s network.
